Kris, Fantastic show as always. This was tough. I love Strats and LPs. Other than the usual weight of a LP they are both close but I'm for the LP. Kris your playing style is just terrific. You belong on stage. You guys are great. Go Thomanns
I was a Strat guy for years and started getting more and more into Les Paul/335 humbucker guitars. I have a Les Paul Deluxe now and it’s what I’ve been looking for all these years. The mini humbuckers have the clarity and balance of a Strat with a thicker midrange like a PAF. It just works for me. P90s are another great Gibson pickup for Strat players but the mini is actually clearer and more “Strat like”. I also love Firebird pickups, they’re the perfect humbucker for Tele players.
I love you guys, these challenge videos always put a big smile on my face :) And as usual you come out with glorious, beefy and lovely tones. In my opinion you both win this time. But since I’m a Strat guy and I love me a Mini Plexi too I gotta go with Guillaume!
Every sound has its beauty but from what I have noticed, studying songs of those times, is that most of them had as preset on their amp the standard Bass:7, Middle:6, Trem:7,5. Of course, that means nothing without the rest of the gear but it was something that they were based on.
Thank you again guys, it was so enjoyable. Even though I am more with Guillame’s choices of legendary guitar players.... I have to admit that Kris’ tone was much closer to the real sound of the myths he chose... How about a video with the tone evolution of an epic guitar player or a band ? Let’s say the Beatles for example or anyone you consider interesting... Keep on like that!
Love the video idea, I'll note it right away. :) Ohh and thanks, I was a little worried if my tone even "works" in a video. Now that I watched the final video, I'm pretty happy with the result. Our audio guy did really well making this sound 100% like how it sounded in the room. 👏Cheers //Kris
I am loving these videos, even though im a late-comer to them. My favourite tones feom the 60s & 70s would be Blackmore, Iommi, Uli Jon Roth, & Gilmour. I really wish you'd do some more of these videos, maybe focusing on Iommi in particular. (With the SG)
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Lol, pish-posh, you do alright for yourself and, because of the Hit the Tone series, you have the edge in dialing in cool sounds for these shootouts!
Two things I've realized watching your vids by now: Strats and Teles have so much more Rock in them than I ever thought (marketing is scary). Y'all make it seem like there is way more versatility in most pieces of gear than they usually get credit for.
Thanks! The reputation of most guitars are kinda strange and unfair. Even a modern metal guitar can do blues fine if you play it that way. :) And yeah, a tele can chug like a beast too. For sure. //Kris
Oh, didn't expect you to actually see the comment among so many on all your videos^^ thank you for making a lot of helpful (and very entertaining) videos about instruments and gear! By all means, please keep them coming :)
I personally love everything from 1600's classical music up to 1980's rock music, 1980's Country music, 1980's rap music (Run DMC, Fat Boys, etc.) and many other genres. I also like Classic Rock of the 1960's and 1970's, Oldies of the 1950's and 1960's, Jazz, Big Band, R&B from the 1960's and 1970's, Blues, Country Western from the 1930's through 1950's ( Tex Ritter, Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Roy Rogers, etc.) Country Music from the 1950 through the 1980's ( Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck, George Jones, Statler Brothers, Oakridge Boys, Alabama, and many many others.). LOL Oldies: ELVIS, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Don Ho (famous for "Tiny Bubbles"), and many others. As for which tone I like best? I like both! My favorite guitar is the Gibson Les Paul, But I also like the Fender Strat.
Agreed! This unpolished, crunchy 70's LP rock tone just really has something magical about it... I kind of wished our music today was a little less perfect and sterile. Thanks for watching the video! Cheers //Kris
Both good tones and no outright winner. I prefer the Marshall and Guillaume’s pedals but I’d find it hard not to use a Les Paul… 😊 Grunge would be a great one for tone matching as it was all very DIY but you should also try something like Motown which isn’t usually covered in these sorts of episodes (probably due to the lack of distortion! 😊)
The best guitar I ever had was an Ibanez Roadstar II with a real tapped custom bridge PUP and then two single coils, I bought it in 1989 and it was stolen in 1997, the insurance coughed up nearly enough to replace the guitar and commision a new bridge pickup but at that time I didnt know of any pickup makers that had a good reputation for making tapped PUPS, I had originally bought the guitar used from a music store and they had no idea who built the original PUP
Being a big fan of punk rock... the guys that started the trend in my mind (outside of The Who) The Kinks... view there's a tone that would be a fun one to try to recreate... would you guys dare to slice up some speaker cones? 😎🤘🎸 🔈🔉🔊🎛️
Hey, thanks a lot! You know, it's just fun. It's all about having a good time and playing the guitar, that's it... at least that's what Guillaume thinks. *insert evil movie villain laughter* :D //Kris
Fun video I love this stufff...but I think the les paul tones were too dirty for classic rock. Jimmy page, Townshend or Kossoff weren't using that much distortion on the amp, only on the fuzz
You gotta have both guitars to cover classic rock! Great tones by both and thanks Kris for playing some Nazareth! I absolutely love Nazareth and even got to see them live!! I think Manny Charlton had one of the best LP tones of the 70s!
Agreed! I've heard Nazareth from my dad when I was super young and this was one of the very few bands that I loved immediately. I'll never forget the first time I've heard Hair of the Dog in my dad's car. Cheers //Kris
... it's shocking that the strat's guitar cable is plugged in the other way around, the silent plug into the pedal the rectangular plug into the strat!!!!
Strats do not sound good all you little hipsters buying starts are going to be very disappointed. Every renowned Stratocaster player had such a modified set up that they may aswell of custom built a whole new guitar. Hendrix played a right handed strat strung for a lefty which messed with the string tension and he also used a lot of pedals. SRV's Number One was a rotting frankenstien parts caster on which he used chorus in the studio and absurdly thick strings and played with a backwards pick. Clapton asked for his Strat to sound like a Les Paul and gibson put a weird boost circuit in it he also modded the bridge so it didn't float which changed the tone. I could go on but your factory strat will not sound tonally like any of these - it'll have the tone of a praise and worship band who do Britney Spears covers.
The competitiveness between you two is one of the main things that makes me watch your videos. I love these challenges!
Today...you both nailed it! No clear winner. I enjoyed both rigs. Nice job guys.
Thanks so much! Cheers //Kris
Ok you've convinced me! Classic rock is awesome!
Kris,

Both have great tones!!! Great job
Thanks Filip! :) //Kris

I can live with that. :) Thanks so much Roberto! //Kris

Tele into an ac30 with a treble booster, tonebender and some tape delay is all you need, can be done relatively cheaply and loud as you like.
really enjoyed this, thanks!
Thanks for the comment! :) Cheers //Kris
Both sounds were great !!
8:22 the light falls out of Guillaume's eyes as he scans the Les Paul....!!! LOL
The light goes away every time Kris starts playing and I realise I have no chance of winner any challenge ever 😂//G

Guillaume has the best Strat tone on a Strat, and Kris the best LP tone on a Les Paul. Both guitars look great too
Great vid guys. Loved to Strat tones more I'm afraid! I'd love to here an 80s metal tones vid😉
Thank you so much, and duly noted !🤘//G
Kris coming in strong with the Nazareth! Both great tones, everyone wins :-)
He sure was, but glad you enjoyed the video :)!//G

Going to have to go with Kris for this one
You should do funk next!
Although I really like strats, but that les Paul tone is thick and I really like it.
Agreed! This unpolished, crunchy 70's LP rock tone just really has something magical about it... I kind of wished our music today was a little less perfect and sterile.

Guillaume wins just because he played Smoke On The Water. I haven't even watched the rest of the video yet! :-p
Hahaha I promise Kris' tones are worth watching the rest of the video, but thanks so much! //G
That Kansas song was played on a 335
I’d take the 62 to 77 watermarks. From Beatles to punk rock. Before those there was rock and roll; after, punk/post punk/hard rock and metal.

Oh man! Nazareth!! Now your messin with…love it!!!
Really like this challenge platform :)
Hey, thanks a lot! You know, it's just fun. It's all about having a good time and playing the guitar, that's it... at least that's what Guillaume thinks. *insert evil movie villain laughter* :D

Strats are always better than Les Paul's, But to be honest I love both of them they both sound great. And thank you so much for making the video 👍
Okay, fair enough. :) And thanks a lot for watching the videos! Cheers //Kris

Hi Guys, please do AC30s sounds with Les Pauls and Strats, along with treble boosts.
Dude, I love stress. I love Liz. Paul's 335 is not making a tour. But that's strat tone wins for me
Guil does great...for a Strat guy... Kris schooled though 😊👍
BAAAAM! haha! Thanks for the trust Boomer! You da man!
//Kris
Guillaume make a hit the tone video for your Playing Sound 2. Thank you.
Will do Andreas, great idea! :)
I love 80s Rock like Bon Jovi . I love how Richie Sambora is playing. I'd love to hear you guys try that.
You gotta have both guitars to cover classic rock! Great tones by both and thanks Kris for playing some Nazareth! I absolutely love Nazareth and even got to see them live!! I think Manny Charlton had one of the best LP tones of the 70s!

Which specific les paul model is that?
Hi, it's a 58 reissue. And it's glorious. :) //Kris
Rock is rnb. It’s the love child of country blues and rock n roll rnb
Go for it again on a budget maybe £500 🤔 then £1000 😁😎 great stuff 👍
LP
Both are great but I prefer Kris' tones, especially with that GE-7 on.
Yeah man! I also vote for Kris' drive+EQ tone 🙋♂️ Man, I hope he wins.
//Kris
There is only one way... The Yng-way
No loser! Those tones were excellent.
i really wanna that pink strat
I understand 😁//G
The les paul sounds great but I prefer the clarity of the Strat
Funk ! ( /and disco :) )
Fender Stratocaster and Marshall Plexi is the sound of rock
I love the feel of my strat but prefer the sound of the les Paul with overdrive…I absolutely hate the Deep Purple strat sound!
Now we need a best reggae ton😂
Guillaume Camp! 🤘
Miss guys like Paul Kossoff. That’s the 70s tone to me.
I prefer Guillaume with his absolutely awesome strat tones!
Hey hey hey, I'm still here, listening. Just sayin' you know... I'm not crying. I can handle this. 😆 //Kris
okay okay😂. Thank you for your answer Kris. I'm just a big Strat fan. but I'm also a big fan of both of you. you're doing a fantastic job. Keep it up.
Greetings!
Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation!
🤘🏻ROCK ON!!🤘🏻
Thanks so much Rajdeep! Your comment is really appreciated! //Kris
"and my name is yum"
yes.
😂😂😂😂 yes.
it's like a brainstorming lol just play ! no talk
You know what, it's the Tele =P
Its a combination of both guitars
... it's shocking that the strat's guitar cable is plugged in the other way around, the silent plug into the pedal the rectangular plug into the strat!!!!
Gil'!
Oh toi ❤️😁
Ever Notice Strat Players including Guitar Heroes Strat Players are Technically better than Les Paul Players ?

Too true. I dont know any strat player without using effects
i have a strat and i need a les paul .. life is hard
Living on the oldest rock the earth can see … I’m gonna go with Guillaume . Jimi FTW 🤘🏽
In the immortal words of Greta VonDoomsberg "How Dare You!" 🤪#HeManStratHaterLOLs
Kris 👍🏻
Cheers Hannes! Thanks! 💪
//Kris
US guitarists would have added fuzz since we invented it.
Les paul all day!
90´s metal for the next PLEEEASEE!!
uhhhhhhh I like that! //Kris
Les Paul wins
Too much idiocy in the video
Fender power. The Les Paul sounded dull and lifeless.
You guys talk too much.
Yeah. Guitar salesmen. They seem pretty full of themselves.
Funky socks are not very rock and roll but everything else was great.
